Is your scooter insurance still correct?

Since the introduction of the helmet requirement for scooters, we have seen that scooter owners choose to convert their blue license plate to a yellow license plate. A vehicle with a blue license plate cannot drive faster than 25 km per hour and falls under the name of a moped. A vehicle with a yellow license plate cannot exceed 50 km per hour and is called a moped. Converting a moped into a moped is not a problem, but that must be reported to the insurer to prevent problems. Here you can read what else you need to pay attention to.

Accurate information with the insurer

When you make adjustments to your scooter, the insurer must know this right away. This is because the rate for a moped is different than for a moped. If this is not reported in time, coverage may be compromised. This means that you are not insured if something happens. This can have major consequences. Especially when there is an injury to one of the parties involved.

Who is the regular driver

Unfortunately, we often see that scooter insurance is in the parents' name, while the actual regular driver, a child, is under 24 years old. This causes major problems in the event of an accident. Some insurers can then have a much higher deductible and others even have no coverage at all. If the license plate number of the scooter is in the child's name and the policy is in the parents' name, indicate that the regular driver is the child. This way, you can prevent problems.

Does the scooter comply with legal requirements

It may be attractive to ride a moustache or moped, but this is not without risk. If an accident occurs, the insurance will decide not to pay out for a souped-up scooter. If, after a measurement correction, it appears that a moped (blue license plate) can drive faster than 29 km per hour, then it is actually a moped (yellow license plate). You can have the moped re-inspected and report this adjustment to the insurer. That's not possible for a souped-up moped; if it can go faster than 50 km per hour, it's actually a motorcycle. Another insurance must be taken out for this.

Do you want to make sure that the scooter meets the requirements? Then have it inspected. A re-inspection can be done by a local scooter repair company (with RDW approval).

No coverage can have major consequences

If, in the event of an accident, it appears that the data has not been provided correctly or that the scooter has been entered, the insurer may decide not to pay out. If it is a unilateral accident, this means that the damage will not be reimbursed. But when an opposing party or incumbent is involved, the consequences can be significant. In this case, the damage suffered by the occupant and the other party will be recovered from the policyholder. This damage can add up quickly, especially when there are personal injuries and/or medical costs.
